Viele Werke der lateinamerikanischen Autoren beschäftigen sich mit der Historie ihres Landes und sind eng verknüpft mit politischen Themen. Diese Werke stehen im Fokus der Analyse Strausfelds, gleichzeitig liefert sie Kurzbiografien der jeweiligen Schriftsteller, schreibt über persönliche Erlebnisse in den Ländern Lateinamerikas und Begegnungen mit heimischen Autoren. Trotz des intellektuellen Anspruchs lesen sich die Texte leicht und flüssig und eröffnen einen tiefen Einblick in die Literatur Lateinamerikas. Ein kluger, interessanter Ansatz, sich der Historie eines Landes zu nähern. Standardwerk bleibt Metzlers "Lateinamerikanische Literaturgeschichte"
