Summary:Fisheries policies in developing countries, once directed at capital-intensive development, have shifted to the creation of institutional services aimed at improving the small-scale sector. In this paper the role of government institutional services rendered to fish traders are analysed in terms of their effects on the economic performance of the fishing industry of Sarawak, East Malaysia.
