One of the main objectives of the conference was to stimulate discussions between economists and social scientists (historians, anthropologists, political scientists, and geographers). Only an interdisciplinary approach allows for a comprehensive understanding of the various symptoms of the recent economic crisis, such as the aggravating financial problems of the Cameroonian state, the growing external debt, and the threatening loss of the highly commended Cameroonian self-sufficiency in food. It is necessary to analyze more closely the consequences of these problems to state elites as well as urbanites and peasants
